June 24: The Starting Point and The Finishing Place Matthew 16:13-19 INTRODUCTION Most of us in our memory bank have stored special places and special people that we associate with a marriage, a job, a first home, a school, or a significant accomplishment. These “first memories” are powerful reminders of experiences and people who shaped us. They are “grounding points” that keep us rooted in our past, faithful in our present, and hopeful in our future.
CONTEXT Jesus and his disciples have been busy! So, he takes them on a retreat. They go up a mountain with a vista of Caesarea Philippi and there the disciples are confronted with a crucial question from Jesus, “Who do you say that I am?” How they answer that question shapes their own identity and purpose in life. The same is true for you and me!

Hey! Do you know who you are? Romans 8:1-2,12-22 14 For all who are led by the Spirit of God are sons of God. 15 For you did not receive the spirit of slavery to fall back into fear, but you have received the Spirit of adoption as sons, by whom we cry, “Abba! Father!” 16 The Spirit himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God,17 and if children, then heirs — heirs of God and fellow heirs with Christ, (ESV) INTRODUCTION: This chapter is considered by many to be the “Mount Everest” of scripture. BACKGROUND: Romans was written by the Apostle Paul to the church in Rome, which he had never visited. Paul wrote with regards to the big picture — laying down the doctrine of salvation and its benefits. He desperately wants them to know the gospel of Christ, and it impacts their life.

June 3: The Courage to Take a Stand Daniel 1 INTRODUCTION It’s easy to take the “easy way” out! The only problem with that strategy is that sometimes the easy way is not the right way. How difficult it is to take a stand for a cause when most people are not willing to stand with you. It’s tempting to do what everyone else is doing and not only to follow the crowd but also to blend in with the crowd when we know that the destination is contrary to God’s desire. CONTEXT Daniel had been ripped away from his home in Jerusalem. He had been forced into exile in Babylon. Because of his immense intelligence and education, Daniel was given the opportunity to be “assimilated” into the culture of Babylon and the ways of King Nebuchadnezzar. All that Daniel had to do was to be willing to live just like everyone else. But such a compromise ran counter to his convictions as a follower of the Lord. He took a stand! CONTENT I.
