What’s in the Names? Matthew 1:1-17
INTRODUCTION Two gospels don’t even record the birth of Jesus (John and Mark are silent about his birth. They have other details to emphasize.) Only Luke and Matthew speak of his birth.
The Gospel of Luke begins with a purpose statement addressed to Theophilus and then foretells the birth of John the Baptist (an important detail because John would be the prophesied forerunner of the Messiah).
But Matthew begins with the title “The book of the genealogy of Jesus Christ.” And then launches into a list of names. Though we tend to skip this portion, this stuff is riveting!
